India # 5

Today's journey was based on exploring and learning more about Indian culture
Prince of Wales Museum
Hot, humid and smoggy

Beautiful building

Museum had an excellent selection of items representing India's older history and culture

There are plenty of gods to go around for everyone!
Ornate wall hang

Quality Workmanship
2500 Year-old carved stone detailing how to live one's life
Worshipping "the divine female energy" - Female divinities were revered as having independent powers, the embodiment of motherhood as well as being fierce warriors
                                             Baby's bed
Clothes maharaja's son would wear. Photograph of a "Royal's" son
Textile quality for the wealthy was amazing

                        Cave paintings were discovered
                     Paintings: Weathered original and recreation

                                     5000 year-old coins
                                            Sword and knife
                            Elaborately designed jewelry
Gridlock: Taxis are double and tripled parked on major street - waiting for customers. All drivers honk. We were told that "honking is more important than the vehicle's motor." Crossing this street with cars coming toward us from all directions was a bit unnerving. But, the locals crossed this way so we did the same. When in Rome...(or in this case, Mumbai).
In addition to the academics, studying history, culture and religion is important in today's India

Art and religion meld into the Indian culture
Plenty of festivals throughout the year
It's a hard life for most Indians. Holidays and festivals help to balance life's issues
