 Blog # 15: Phuket, Thailand

Our daughter, Shira, indicated that the gray monkey is a "Langur"...
...and the brown or tan monkey is a "Toque Macaques"
The older kids tend to hang out together. Also, some "masks" are worn throughout Southwest Asia
We are now seeing more water buffalo. During times of celebration, one of these animals will be slaughtered and prepared for BBQ
There are many unusual art pieces throughout the ship: Paintings, sculptures, etc.

Many of these paintings require some thinking as to what statement the artist is  trying to make.
For instance, the woman appears to be admiring the man. But, what is the man thinking?
Arlene had a fight with the towel rack. The towel rack won in the first round!
The wake of the ship is quite pretty
Phuket sunset looks like an "Asian painting.
Each night hundreds of fishing boats shine lights onto the water to attract squid
                                    Typical Thai boat taxi

Fresh fish at a beach restaurant
No manhole but still a pretty design
                                    Ready to start touring
                                        Thai Elephant camp
Once again, not knowing what to expect, this was another startling experience.
Time to feed the elephants. But first, the meal had to be prepared---by us. We were given a plate full of grain, a piece of banana, sweet potato  and a chunk of sugar cane. We needed gloves. The sticky ingredients were then "mushed" together into a ball
We were also given large pieces of sugar cane
                                    OMG!
Umm. Yum! Want another piece? They are eating machines and very gentle as they picked up the food from our hands.
Elephants can only see from the side
It was weird having these large animals wandering around us
The skin has a rough, leathery feeling with a few prickly hairs.
They like sugar cane but not one at a time...at least four are needed for them to pick it up.
Time for a pedicure
This was our first experience touching elephants
A tail, tale - time for a trim
                                    Happy child in the camp
                                    Shrine in the camp area
After feeding time, elephants went over to a watering hole to splash mud onto their body; to be used somewhat like sunscreen
Jerry got splashed. Mud ended up on his pants
This elephant knew that the hose provided water. Using the trunk and feet, it was able to maneuver the hose and start drinking
Now that the elephant was covered with mud, it was time to wash everything off
                                Still needs more cleaning
Jerry did not understand why the men's restroom had showers. Now, it has become clear. The handlers need to wash off the mud and anything else that's in the water. The handler's actually scooped up the poop droppings with their hands. When finished with their chores, the handlers take a shower to clean off the mud, etc.

Elephant's can hold their breath just like people
                                    A quick comparison
