Blog # 11 -  Sri Lanka # 1 - Colombo

The ship's "Operational issues" necessitated we leave Maldives a day earlier and sail to Colombo, Sri Lanka. Arrived at night. Lots of activity - loading and loading cargo

         5, 6, 7, 8 -- Arlene joins the "Sri Lanka Greeting Troop

Dance routine, drum beats and chants were similar to what we would find in Africa

Temples, churches and modern buildings are located throughout the city. Significant Mainland China investments have been occurring to further develop Colombo's infrastructure.

English architectural designs are situated throughout the town

Interesting designs!

For a relatively small city, a freeway system is being built.
Check out the worker on the left side of the photo. Where is OSHA?
As modern as Sri Lanka and more specifically Colombo is, "older" ways of doing things still exist.
We were informed that this was a national holiday and many businesses would be closed. Normally, all of these carts would be used to manually carry goods from warehouses to stores and/or the dock area

Pedestrian business is slow

Flea markets and street vendors are located throughout the downtown area. Holidays are not good for business!

We've seen many Buddhas over the years and knew there were different "designs." We did not know (until we came across this sign) the significance of the different hand formations
                        What is the buddha's message?

Armed guards from different military branches are located throughout the city
