                                                    Europe April/May # 31

                              Renoir and Cote d'Azur

Renoir's popularity caused him to move from one location to another

To get away from "the crowds," he ultimately relocated to Cagnes-sur-Mer

There are many olive trees on Renoir's property. This one is 1500 years old

This is the exact location where Renoir painted this picture

Renoir liked "well rounded" women
He only sculpted two pieces. The many other pieces were sculpted by an associate under Renoir's guidance
Renoir was very ill in his later years
His joints were essentially "frozen" in place causing pain and lack of strength and little movement

Family members were used as models
Many young girls were also used as models. They were not paid for their time
He loved having his children sculpted...
as well as painting his own children
Renoir was often commissioned to paint friends
Unpopular was his technique of using a "pearl" affect - a soft, translucent feeling
We had forgotten that we visited his home about eight years ago
However, at that time, we were on our own. Now (and with a guide) we learned a great deal more about Renoir
Most of Renoir's greatest paintings are in museums
Pretty setting
View from his home
This painting and the following two pieces were variation on a theme
The woman in the upper right may have been his wife
Trying to get it right: This may have been his final version
Unbeknownst to her husband, the woman on the right side of the painting snuck away so she could be painted by the famous, Renoir

One of the rooms where he painted.  This is the chair used to bring him outside to paint
Family photos are throughout his home
He moved to a lower-level room where there was better light. At the end he had the paint brushes attached to his hand  - it was too painful to paint on his own
Jerry took a picture of an old black and white movie that was projected onto a wall
He may have been a chain smoker
"Hello world" from Renoir's balcony
Check out one of the more popular beaches. Notice the stones and rocks. This is definitely not a "sandy" beach
An older part of Nice
Plenty of elaborate fountains in Europe
