Pompeii

Mt. Vesuvius
Looking down at the catastrophic event that took place in 79 AD

Time to work our way to the top, explore and learn about the people who lived there
Vising the relatively new museum
The artisans were very sophisticated producing remarkable pieces

Broken fresco pieces
Melted glass object
These were examples of people found during excavation

Different and interesting style of depicting the people of Pompeii

Fresco possibly depicting a circus with elephants

The quality of work and detail is remarkable

Look how many small items were found and the digging continues

It is estimated that 15,000 people lived in Pompeii

2000 people probably died

Even animals perished

When visiting Peru, we were surprised at the immensity of  the Machu Picchu area. We were equally amazed at the size and magnitude of Pompeii

This place is huge. It goes on and on and on...

Our guide was well into his sixties, spry and was much like the Duracell rabbit. His goal was to make Pompeii come alive for us, cram as much information he could into or brain in such a short time and keep us moving
These are stepping stones used to cross over running water coming from an aqueduct
Our guide yelled out to us every thirty seconds or so, "Andiamo" - Let's go, keep moving!

There was no time to truly take everything in - we had to quickly take photos and move on
The many steps to reach these areas were roughly six to nine inches high - very difficult to navigate up the steps and down the steps

There were photo ops everywhere we went

These holes were used to measure amounts of grain

This photo provides a good perspective of the city's size
Wealthy people lived in villas. Some of the rooms and areas reminded us of the Getty Museum in Malibu. The small pool area was used to collect water

Sophisticated artwork still remains

The "Beverly Hills" of Pompeii
`

At this time, Egyptian art was still two-dimensional

This was one of the local brothels. Noticed the circumcised figures

Fast food stall
Groves in the pathway from the carts and chariots made it difficult for us to walk
This was an impressive room
It's a wonderment that so much art survived
Who was this wealthy person that lived here?

Grain was ground here
Incredible detail
Gladiators fought in this area. Bodies of chained slave girls and women were found in the room behind the pillars on the right side of the photo
and, of course, the town had to have an amphitheater
