Blog # 6 - Palermo, Sicily
On our way to Palermo the ship was surrounded by a thunder and lightening event Very loud - Continual lightening bursts
One huge burst turned the night sky into a twilight feeling
Jerry spoke to the ship's doctor
Passengers could be in serious trouble if the ship gets a direct lightening hit
Emergency evacuations could be a reality
Sicily's vehicles - technically advanced
Many memorials throughout town dealing with lawyers/judges killed by mafia
Gorgeous church
Built in 1500's - Very ornate design
Floor and ceiling - ornate designs
We could spent "hours" trying to take everything in
Our favorite things to do - visit a local market
Zucchini roots top left, actual vegetable top right (almost three feet long) Mama, Mia...that's-a big-a zucchini!
Many home made items - lots of eggplant dishes
Hot food also available - mostly fried
One of the few affordable commodities is food - locally grown, caught, etc.
"Finger food/snacks" - Yum!
Anyone for fresh fish?
Refrigeration? Clean knives?
How many pounds of squid do you want?
This fish monger has everything you could possibly want
Check out the swordfish head - That's a big fish!
There was no "fish smell" in this area of the market
The octopus looks good!
Can't wait to check out the next market
Tourist shop in market area
We saw this old cart in alleyway
Massive cathedral
Pretty garden
The cathedral was also used as a mosque
Koran inscription on an outside pillar
Depending on the time of month/day a beam of sunlight will follow the golden line
Very ornate
Lots of walking, plenty of stairs - time to rest
Arlene's chair was very popular
She could have sold fifty of them to the passengers on the ship
Found a vending machine down a "sketchy" alleyway
Condoms sold based on options and quantity
Old part of town - buildings were once used by the wealthy
Tour guide called the entire area, "SHAME!"
She was upset that the city is allowing the area to further decline in upkeep
Old "palace" used for art shows
More shame - at huge expense, fountain was purchased from a wealthy Florence family.
Fountain (as well as other city fountains) are in a a state of disrepair, no water, no upkeep
Lots of graffiti in this area, anti-Israel slogans and other political statements
FOUR CORNERS:
There are four buildings situated at each corner of an intersection
Each building represents four seasons
Four kings, etc.
