Blog # 2 (2023) New York, Martha's Vineyard, Bar Harbor and Cruise

"Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today,
I want to be a part of it..."

Originally not on our radar, we combined New York with a cruise
We took several taxi's - three drivers stood out: One man left Liberia and tried to start a restaurant business. Another was a young man (22 years old) from Algeria. He found a way to leave his country's grief. The other was from Nepal and could trace his heritage throughout Southwest Asia - All three were seeking "The American Dream!" The Nepal driver's previous passenger didn't pay. He was shaken. We gave him a nice tip!
Notice the statue's size relative to the boats
It's s shame that many Americans do not subscribe to Liberty's message: "Give me your poor...your yearning to be free..."
Jerry always get teased about all the adapters and cables he brings on trips
His motto is, "Just in case!"
Normally, ships have 115 V and 220V sockets
Knowing this trip would not include Italy, Jerry did not take the Italian adapter.
Surprise! Surprise! Many of the ship's sockets are Italian. HUH? How did that happen? Jerry had to borrow an adapter from the ship. The Navigator was an old Russian Trawler - not the Nina, Pinta or Santa Maria!

Ship's entertainment is excellent
Martha's Vineyard offers plenty of picturesque homes to see
Homes are very expensive - Folks left mainland during Covid which increased value

Many walls were made from ballast coming from the old wooden ships

Homes are also made from ship's ballast
Modern and new forms of artwork mixes with the old homes
This rock wall (with the lichen) is hundreds of years old

Mennonites built homes using the same design

Revisiting the Kennedy library
Memorabilia of the era. Do you remember these things?
When was the last time you purchased a newspaper from a newsstand?
Bring back memories?
Another memory!
This visit seemed to emphasize more of Jacki's role as the president's wife. She was instrumental in saving/relocating Abu Simbel temples

A variety of design and construction issues had to be overcome

Glass on all the newer buildings use a special glass to reflect what is across the street
Wooden pilings keeps this old church from sinking into the watery muck below the surface
Downtown buildings created a dangerous wind tunnel
To save time traveling coast of Massachusetts, our ship went through the Cape Cod Canal
Small town grocery store
"Wampom" - Indians used clam shells for money and to make jewelry
We visited Acadia National Park - Very green

The area is "thick" with pine trees

Jerry jokes with "Linda" - gets audience laughing - plays "duet"
Hearing that we will have our 54th anniversary on the ship, Jerry gets rewarded with CD and rose to present to me. Jerry has to get on his knees and express his love.
