Latin America 2022 # 4

 Latin America # 4

Cartagena, Colombia (Part 2)

Plenty of ornate buildings

Simon Bolivar: Statue manufactured in Germany

Town center area: Interesting things to see/experience in all directions

Spanish hero

Plenty of art throughout town

Jerry discovered an oasis inside a building complex

We discovered a place that made homemade empanadas and other fabulous items. Everything looked delicious. Unfortunately, we did not have any local currency. Oh well. Maybe next time.

Typical central plaza where everyone hangs out

Pub takes over part of a $10 million dollar home

Colonial style building. We were told that approximately 10% of the children graduate from high school. Also, people have to pay $3500 if they want to join the military. Why? There is a high demand to join because of a good pension program after twenty years. The fee weeds out a lot of people.

Old church destroyed, re-built in the 1600-1700’s era

The “Inquisition” was not just in Spain. It took place in Colombia – in the 1600’s. Besides the Jews, African slaves and indigenous people were also targeted. Some of the priests went out of their way to convert these people to Christianity as a means to keep the three groups from getting tortured or killed.

Many fruit vendors sell product where there is a lot of foot traffic

Similar to Mexico City and other large Latin American cities, Cartagena set up elaborate Christmas decorations

These areas are quiet during the day, “crazy” at night!

Intense heat (high 80’s, felt like >100) + high humidity was too much for this poor soul.

Our walk back to ship unexpectedly took us through an aviary
