Blog 5 - Malta and Sicily

Blog 5 - Malta and Sicily

                                        Malta

Perhaps the most amazing port entrance is Valletta, Malta

There must have been "thousands" of soldiers protecting the city in ancient times

Huge fortress surrounds most of the city
Several areas in Kotor, Montenegro were used in "Game of Thrones."
Over the years this area has been used for many movies

We've been to Malta several times - always something new to see

Took a river cruise - Churches and mosques throughout the island

Malta is the crossroads of the Mediterranean. Many cultures conquered/influenced the area

Entering the "inner" city

Plenty of excavation occurring throughout the island
It will take decades and lots of money to restore the ruins
Greeks, Etruscans, Romans, Byzantines, etc. ruled/roamed throughout the island
Pushed out area was originally enclosed - allowing home owners to peer through a "spy hole" at bottom to see if intruders were below
Always something unexpected to see

Sicily (Syracuse)

A variety of ships (many unique) can be seen in European harbors

Getting ready to tour

                                               Church built around a superstition
A woman was killed, martyred - After death, she continued to cry for days

                                                    Ornate churches throughout the island

The "ear" - actually an ancient quarry offers plenty of opportunities to hear echo's

Not enough energy to go deeper into the quarry

If you like ruins, this is the place

Looks like there aren't many tourists - Nope! "Thousands " are exploring behind Jerry

                                                    This was once a temple/altar

                                                                  Greek amphitheater

Plenty of places to discover

Where's Zorba?
